Best Time to Visit Chanshal Pass Trek
May and early June are an ideal time for trekking, with clear treks, snow patches near passes, and beautiful blooming meadows.
Mid-September through October: Clear skies post-monsoon with vibrant autumnal hues and peaceful conditions.
Be cautious between July – the middle of September (monsoon landslides), and November-April (heavy snowfall, closure of passes).

Chanshal Pass Trek – Day-wise Itinerary
Day One (Driving Route): Shimla to Rohru to Larot
Distance: 150 km in 6-7 hrs.
Altitude: Larot (2,500m). Stay at a guesthouse or homestay.
Travel through beautiful apple orchards and charming Himalayan villages before reaching Larot, the starting point for Chanshal Pass. On your arrival, enjoy a leisurely walk to acclimatize before dinnertime.
Day Two: Larot to Kalapani Thach (Trekking).
Distance: 8-9 km | Time Required for Completion: 5-7 hrs.
Altitude Gain: 2,500 to 3,200 metres.
As you climb slowly through lush forests and fields of beautiful wildflowers, Kalapani will become visible. A level grassy area abutting a flowing stream provides the ideal location to set up camp for the first night of your journey.
Day Three – Kalapani Thach- Kharshali Thach
Distance: 7-8km | Timeframe: 5 hours.
Today’s walk traverses expansive alpine landscapes and traditional shepherd dwellings. As you draw near Kharshali Thach, snow-capped mountain peaks will come into focus.
Day Four: Kharshali to Chanshal Pass to Litham Thach
Distance: 12-13 km | Timeframe: 7-8 hours
Altitude 3,700 meters to 4,520 meters (pass) and downhill descent to an approximate altitude of 3,400 meters
Camping: Tent at Litham Thach for accommodation.
On this important summit day, you’ll face a challenging climb up Chanshal Pass for breathtaking views of the Himalayas and on down towards Litham Thach – an alpine meadow at high altitude – to relax afterward.
Day Five: Litham Thach to Kwar Village (Trekking).
Distance: 8-9km | Timeframe: 4- 5 hours
Altitude Range: 3,400-2,500m.
Stay: Homestay at Kwar.
Travel through forest and agricultural land until reaching Kwar, an idyllic Himachali village located in the lesser-known Dodra-Kwar valley and noted for its distinct architectural style and beautifully crafted wooden temples.
Day Six: Kwar to Rohru to Shimla Drive (drive).
Distance of Travel: 190-200km in 8-9 Hours.
Return to Shimla by driving either along Chanshal Road if it is accessible, or taking an alternative route that links Dodra-Kwar to Rohru through various roads.
How to Reach For Chanshal Pass Trek
By Air
Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti) – 160 km away from Larot.
Alternate airport: Chandigarh Airport (280 km from Larot).
By Train
Kalka Railway Station (260 km away from Larot).
Once in Shimla, take either a drive or a bus ride through Rohru to Larot.
By Road (Recommended)
Route: Shimla to Theog to Kotkhai to Jubbal to Rohru to Larot (Approx 7 hours driving time from Shimla).
Rohru’s public transport options are extremely limited, making private cars and shared cabs the optimal means of travel outside the town.
