Day 2: Trek to Deoriatal - The Lake of the Gods

The 4-5 km trail from Chopta to Tungnath is well-defined and gradually ascends through rhododendron forests and open meadows. Tungnath Temple – The Highest Shiva Shrine

Heading out for a trek? Don’t forget to carry headgear to protect your beautiful face and head from the sun, wind, and dust! It’s an essential accessory that keeps you safe and comfortable throughout your adventurous journey. So, make sure you pack it before you step out into nature!

  1. Head Lamps are essential for the night, and most importantly, headtorchs keep your hands free while trekking.
  2. Hats or Cap– Cap will protect you from winds and sometimes freezing temperatures for the night. Hats protect you from the sun during the day and also ensure they have a strap so the hat doesn’t blow from the wind.
  3. Sunglasses– you will need specific sunglasses for trekking. The glasses should protect from UV rays, fit your face perfectly so it doesn’t fall while you climb, jump, or cross an obstacle, and be according to the weather conditions of the place; the glass should be made to fit different weather conditions.
  4. Buff / Balaclava– You must carry this to protect your mouth or neck from extreme temperatures and keep it warm.

Clothes

When trekking in high altitudes, prepare for cold weather by wearing layers. Layering traps heat, keeps you warm, and allows you to easily adjust your clothing as temperatures fluctuate.

Layering is important for different seasons when trekking. When planning a high-altitude trek, it is important to prepare for the cold weather. Wearing layers is the best approach as it provides both protection and flexibility when the weather changes frequently in the mountains. Layering helps to trap heat and keep your body warm, while at the same time allowing you to easily adjust your clothing as the temperature fluctuates. By wearing layers, you can enjoy your trek comfortably and stay safe in the unpredictable mountain weather

  1. For spring, summer, and monsoon treks, consider wearing three layers: a woollen sweater, a fleece, and a padded jacket.
  2. For autumn treks, add one more fleece layer to make it four layers.
  3. For winter treks, you may need five layers with thermals, a woollen sweater, two fleeces, and a padded jacket.
  4. T-shirt/sleeve shirt– Bring three T-shirts and two quick-dry trek pants, wearing one and carrying the others. Long sleeve shirts help to protect from sun UV rays. We recommend synthetic T-shirts as they get dry quickly when they get wet.
  5. Hiking / Trekking Jacket– down jackets (-5 to-10 C) or two-three-layer jackets.
  6. Thermals– at least two pairs of thermals help keep the body warm during cold weather.
  7. Undergarments– you can carry them according to your habitual and hygiene requirements.
  8. Gloves– 1 pair of gloves will keep your hand warm and nice.
  9. Trek Pants– Bring 2 to 3 comfortable trekking pants. Trekking pants play a significant role, as they are designed for comfort and mobility, making trekking easier. It should be Synthetic so that it gets dry quickly when wet.
  10. Rain Wear– you can carry a raincoat or Poncho. During long rains and snowfalls, the waterproof jackets start leaking. Still, the Poncho and raincoats keep you dry, so choose accordingly.

Tip: If you choose a raincoat on your trek, carry a small waterproof cover so things inside your backpack can’t get wet. If you carry a Poncho, you don’t need to worry. It protects both you and your backpack.

Foot Gears

When it comes to planning a trek, one of the most important aspects is to ensure that you have the right kind of foot gear.

  1. Trekking shoes whichare waterproof and have ankle support. Walking / Hiking sandals which can be used off the trek, i.e., in the morning and evening hours when you reach the campsite, basically to get your feet rest from heavy boots, sometimes used for crossing streams and rivers, it’s more comfortable and safer than crossing barefoot or wetting your shoes. Sneakers (Optional) can be worn for normal driving days or used around the camp.

If it is a long day of trekking, you will be given a packed snack.

Panch Kedar Temple Legend and History

Your trek to Tungnath connects you directly to one of the most fascinating mythological narratives in Hindu tradition – the legend of the Panch Kedar temples. According to the Hindu epic Mahabharata, the five Pandava brothers sought to atone for their sins after the devastating Kurukshetra war, where they defeated their cousins, the Kauravas. The brothers wished to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for committing fratricide and Brahmahatya (killing of Brahmins) during the war.

When you visit Tungnath, you’re following the same spiritual path the Pandavas took thousands of years ago. Initially, they traveled to Varanasi (Kashi), Shiva’s favorite city, but the deity was deeply incensed by the death and dishonesty of the war and chose to avoid them. Shiva assumed the form of a bull (Nandi) and hid in the Garhwal region, leading to the creation of what you now experience as the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit.

Terms & Conditions for Availing of Free Trek

Avail Free Trek- You will need to book as per the normal procedure by paying the full trek amount. Once you successfully complete the trek, the equivalent amount will be reimbursed within 7 working days.

Applicability – The voucher will be valid only for the same trek that was left incomplete.

Non-Transferable – The voucher is strictly in the trekker’s name and cannot be sold, transferred, or gifted.

Voucher Value – Covers the trek fee only (excludes transport, permits, rentals, or insurance).

Validity – Must be used within 24 months of issue.

Additional Costs to be Borne by Trekkers –

– Transport charges to/from base camp

– Trek permits and entry fees

– Insurance (if applicable)

– Personal gear rentals

Trek Cost Difference – If the trek fee increases at the time of re-booking, the trekker must pay the difference.

Advance Booking – Voucher redemption must be confirmed 30 days prior to the trek batch.

One-Time Use – Voucher is valid for a single redemption only.

Force Majeure – If the trek is again affected by natural calamities, political unrest, or government orders, the same policy will apply, but a second voucher will not be issued.

No Cash Refund – The voucher cannot be encased, adjusted against other services, or clubbed with discounts.

Cancellation and Refund FOR FREE TREK ONLY:

– If a trek is cancelled by Trekup India due to operational reasons, weather conditions, or natural calamities, your amount will be refunded in cash within 7 working days.

Trek India is proud to be an Active Member of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), which is the apex National Body for mountaineering and allied sports in India. Therefore, if you are a Government Employee and choose to go with us, you will receive a special casual leave allowance.

Important Guidelines:-

1. Eligibility for Special Casual Leave (SCL)

  • Can only be availed by an Indian Government Employee
  • It’s applicable only for Treks conducted and operated within India
  • Need to apply at least 30-35 days before the Trek date

2. How to Apply and Procedure

  • Book your Trek with Trekup India with the assistance of our Mt. Experts
  • Once Trek is booked, your respective Mt. Expert will assist you and will request some additional details and documents.
  • Our Management will review the details and, thereafter, will apply for Special Casual Leave (SCL) at the IMF Portal, and the reference ID will be provided to you.
  • The application is internally reviewed by the designated Officer at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, and subject to all correct details and documents, your application will be approved.
  • On approval of your application, Trekup India will be notified, and accordingly, the application fee will be requested from you, approximately Rs. 250/- Per application plus processing fee.
  • On receiving Payment from your end, it shall further proceed to the IMF
  • The approval and letter confirmation from the IMF is received within 10-15 days from the date of Payment.
  • As soon as the confirmation Letter is received by Trekup India, it is accordingly forwarded to the respective trekker.
  • You are Approved for Special Casual Leave (SCL) – Congratulations

3. Personal Details and Documents required to proceed with the application.

4. Leave Policy

  • As per Pay Commission rules, government employees are entitled to up to 30 days of SCL in a calendar year for trekking or mountaineering expeditions.
  • Treks must be organized by a registered organization, such as Trekup India, recognized by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF).
Important Note:
  • Today, many companies falsely use the IMF logo on their site to show they are IMF-affiliated, so be careful and ask for an IMF-registered Certificate copy.

Age criteria for Booking a Trek with Trekup India

It’s often said that age is just a number; however, when it comes to trekking in the mountains, age certainly matters as your safety is our priority at Trekup India.

  • Children below 7 years are typically not advised for higher altitude treks (Except short family-friendly day hikes)
  • 08-14 Years – Allowed on easy grade of treks (up to 9500 ft.) under parental/guardian supervision with good physical fitness.
  • 15-18 Years – Suitable for joining Trekup fixed departures for treks of Easy to Moderate difficulty, up to 13500 ft. altitude, with good physical fitness.
  • 19-50 Years – This group is eligible for almost all of the treks being operated by Trekup India, subject to good fitness and medical clearance.
  • 51-65 years – Permitted only on easy to moderate treks, a recent high-altitude trek certificate, and a Mandatory fitness certificate from an MBBS doctor are required.

Medical/Fitness Criteria for High Altitude Trek

Fitness Criteria:-

Trekking in the mountain region definitely demands great stamina, Endurance, and strength; therefore, anyone planning to come on an adventure in the mountains needs to be physically, medically, and mentally fit. Below are some criteria.

  • Cardiovascular Endurance: Should be able to run 4-5 km in 30 minutes
  • Core Strength: Should be able to carry approximately. A 10-12 Kg backpack can be comfortably taken at high altitudes for approximately 6-8 days. (6-8 Kms daily.)
  • Leg Strength: Strong Calves, thighs, and knees for steep climbs and descents
  • Flexibility: Should be able to practice Body stretching Exercises, Yoga, and Breathing exercises 30-60 minutes daily.

Medical Criteria:-

When embarking on treks in the mountains, it is essential to meet specific health parameters, which are crucial for one’s safety at high altitudes.

  • BMI (Body Mass Index): Should be in the healthy range (18-25); extremely underweight/overweight trekkers face higher risks at higher altitudes.
  • Blood Pressure: Normal BP 120/80. High BP will definitely cause complications when at a Higher altitude.
  • Oxygen Saturation: SpO₂ should be ≥ 95% at sea level
  • Heart and Lung Health: There should be no history of cardiac disease, asthma, or any respiratory issues.
  • Fitness Test (Optional but recommended): Medical certificate of fitness from a registered MBBS Doctor before coming on a trek.
  • Surgery: Any recent surgery, as well as inform us in case of any past surgery.
  • Medical History: Should not have any medical history, especially BP, Diabetes, Thyroid, Epilepsy, seizures, Alzheimer’s, or any other serious health issues.

Experience Criteria :-

  • Beginners Trekker: New to mountains, beginners can tackle any 4-5 day trek with an altitude of approximately 5000-9500 ft.
  • Intermediate Trekker: As you already know the mountains, and if you have already done treks, then you can attempt treks of 6-8 days at an altitude of 10000-13500 ft.
  • Experienced Trekker: This means you should have a better understanding of the mountains and have completed at least 3-4 intermediate treks, enabling you to attempt treks of 8-12 days with altitudes of 14000-18000 Ft.
